It’s safe to say that your baby’s nursery has the potential of being the most creative room in your house. Nursery décor allows your imagination to run free and gives you the ability to work with many colors, materials and themes. Best of all, nursery décor has the power to take you back to your own childhood and bring back memories that can be incorporated into your nursery and share with your baby. It’s a stepping stone in creating a bond with your baby the loving memories that are to come. This week, the expert designers at Jabbour Linens would like to offer some advice, ideas and inspiration on how to approach nursery décor.
Before anything else, you need to take a good look around your nursery and absorb the layout of the door, windows and lighting fixtures. These items will be deciding factors as to where you place furniture and, if applicable, how you will go about painting a mural in the nursery. It’s very important for a nursery to get fresh air and sunlight, so be sure not to block the windows by placing large furniture in front of them. Your best bet for your window would be to place a gliding chair in front.
Baby furniture is generally made of wood. Natural colored woods set a traditional mood in the baby nursery. Cream color furniture lends a more luxurious feel and black painted baby furniture creates a modern look. Your furniture is an integral part of the nursery décor. What is more important than the look of the furniture is its functionality and safety. When purchasing your baby furniture, keep in mind what it’s there for and be sure to research the safety features to make sure that your child is well protected as he/she sleeps.
Once you decide on furniture placement, you can decide on your color theme. When giving advice for painting other rooms in the house, we generally recommend two to three colors at the most. However, when decorating a baby nursery, you can use more colors. The only caution that we are going to give you is to use colors that are relevant to your theme. Although it’s acceptable to use four different colors in a nursery, remember that they nursery is the room that the baby sleeps in. It should give a feeling of ease and relaxation as well as fun. Start with a base color such as a light yellow, blue or green and use accent colors to spice up the décor.
Painting a mural on one or more of the walls is a fun way to express creativity and liven up a nursery. Some of our favorite wall décor ideas are:
- Circus- clowns, balloons, acrobats and animals
- Transportation- cars, airplanes, trains and boats
- Animal Themes – jungle, safari, butterflies and ladybugs
- Cartoon themes- Winnie the Pooh, Disney, Dora and Diego
- Fairytale- Princesses, fairies and unicorns
- Cowboy- farm, lasso, cows
We chose these mural and nursery decorations ideas because your baby will continue to enjoy them as he/she grows up as a toddler and beyond.
Accessories are vital to nursery décor. Use actual toys and decorations as wall ornaments throughout the nursery. Another fun idea is to hang objects from the ceiling. Lamps, bookends and jacket hangers can easily be found in most nursery décor themes. Bookends and coat hangers can be made further personalized with the addition of your baby’s name to them. Monogrammed baby blankets, duvets and comforters can also be create a more personal touch to your nursery bedding.
Congratulations on your new baby. The team at Jabbour Linens hopes that you enjoy decorating your nursery and we wish you health and happiness as you embark on your journey.
