It’s that time of year again when you start thinking about how to bring a sense of joy and family values to your home.  This means deciding whether you want to use traditional Christmas decorating ideas or a more modern holiday décor. In this blog post we are going to compare traditional vs. modern Christmas décor so that you can get some new ideas, be spared from a bit of stress and decide which you prefer to use in your holiday decorating.

Traditional Christmas Decorating Ideas

Christmas décor has traditionally been influenced by a dazzling Christmas tree, a wreath and mistletoe. All of these are ingredients used to bring a sense of serenity infused with a touch of energy and laughter to the atmosphere. Here are some ideas for your Christmas décor that will continue that feeling:

1. Intertwine a long wreath with red ribbon and wrap it around the base of a lamp, staircase and any other still frame. This can be done with popcorn and cranberries as well.

2. Add Christmas influences to your holiday table decorations. For example, you can display a red tablecloth or table runner and compliment it with holiday napkins.

3. Another easy and festive holiday table decoration is placing an elegant wreath in the middle of the table and displaying a large scented candle in the center.

4. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without snowflake decorations in the window and at the base, or even the tip, of the Christmas tree. Children love helping out with the snowflake decorations, so getting this set up will help create some family memories that you will cherish for a long time to come.

5. Another way to bring the holidays to your home is to use towels in the bath that coincide with Christmas colors. You can use one color or mix and match to get a holiday feel. Guest towels featuring Santa or other Christmas themes can be found as well.

6. Get out that old toy train set and set it up around the tree.

7. Don’t forget to add some holly and poinsettia.

Modern Christmas Decorating Ideas

Holiday decorating has changed for a large portion of people over the years. Many families are now using plastic trees and using color schemes of their own choosing to create a more modern Christmas décor.

1. Rather than a tablecloth, use holiday table decorations such as a table runner and top it with a large glass vase filled with scented pine cones and berries.

2. Drape a long wreath over the fireplace (in place of stockings) and decorate it with citrus fruit or flowers.

Use white towels that are trimmed with a solid color in the bath. A red and white color combination maintains the traditional holiday feel, but has a more modern edge to it.

3. Rather than traditional Christmas plants, try some Osmanthus or a green cactus with a flower.

4. Go white. Using white in your entire Christmas décor will brighten up the room while maintaining an elegant look.

Whichever direction that you decide to take in your Christmas décor, keep it fun. Remember that all the shopping, cooking and decorating that you’re doing is because it’s something that your family can do together and will create a lifetime of memories.
